One month of discussions on the theme “Women, STEM, and STEAM”

Women of Change Italia, an association that promotes the role of women in social change and their representation in all professional sectors, is a testimonial and spokesperson for the National STEM Week (from February 4 to 11, 2025), with Women of STEM/Talks, a month of interviews with key opinion leaders, women and men, in the fields of Science, Technology, Finance, Space, University, and the Third Sector. This year’s edition is organized in partnership with Women&Tech® ETS and Nuove Reti, and is sponsored by the Italian Space Agency, Asseprim - Confcommercio, and Global Thinking Foundation.

The second edition of Women of STEM/Talks will begin on February 4th on the occasion of the National STEM Week (from the English Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), a month of interviews with key opinion leaders, women and men, in the fields of Science, Technology, Finance, Space, University, Third Sector, which Women Of Change Italy in partnership with Women&Tech® ETS and Nuove Reti, dedicates to an in-depth exploration of the theme of Women’s representation in STEM fields and, in particular, this year, to the STEM – STEAM combination, where the “A” refers to Arts & Humanities, as emphasized by Gianna Martinengo, President of Women&Tech® ETS and CEO of DKTS, who states: “The gender gap in the STEAM field is a cultural and social challenge, for equal opportunities, equity, and women’s participation in the economy and society. Our country has an urgent need for science, technology, and women: it is necessary to promote this meeting and strengthen it at every level and in all territories. Research, science, and technology have no boundaries, but their effect multiplies when they can realize their synergy in true inclusive hubs where different worlds and disciplines can cross-pollinate. Places where women’s ingenuity, professionalism, and enthusiasm can express themselves and enrich innovation with meanings, from a complementary perspective not overlapping with that of men.”

STEM skills are the key to the professions of the future; in these subjects, girls achieve significant academic results, however, they could gain greater presence in the professional field.

The initiative, sponsored by the Italian Space Agency, Asseprim - Confcommercio, and Global Thinking Foundation, aims to keep the debate alive on the space occupied by women in sectors such as STEM, where the demand for professionals has grown exponentially, both nationally and internationally.

"Supporting women in the STEAM sector is one of the keys to building a more inclusive and competitive future. At Global Thinking Foundation, we believe that education and training in science, technology, and the arts should be accessible to everyone. The Women of STEM/Talks 2025 initiative represents a unique opportunity to highlight the experiences of women who, with determination and talent, are changing the face of these fields, creating new models of leadership and innovation." comments Claudia Segre, Delegate and Advisor Emerging Technologies Women7.

According to a recent McKinsey analysis, even though the number of female graduates exceeds that of males, only one in three graduates in STEM subjects is female, 38%. And women occupy only 22% of all technology jobs in European companies.

According to the latest study by the Digital Skills Observatory, in our country about 50% of companies report difficulties in finding STEM profiles, with peaks exceeding 60% in sectors related to Information Technology and engineering. Our action is aimed at promoting awareness to eliminate stereotypes that lead many, both men and women, to consider women unsuitable for STEM fields, which are, moreover, those with the highest returns.” – concludes Anita Falcetta, President of Women Of Change Italy
