Women&Tech® ETS - Association of Women and Technologies, a network for enhancing female talent in technology, innovation, and scientific research, launches the new edition of the International Tecnovisionarie Award 2023, dedicated to the theme "Energy and Environment" with the aim of highlighting the contribution of women in these crucial sectors for the future of the planet and celebrating their role in achieving global goals on climate change.
The Technovisionaries Award, the annual event recognized for its social value, has been celebrating women who have made a difference in their fields of specialization since 2008, contributing to promoting gender equality in the technological world. The best Technovisionaries of 2023 will be chosen by a jury composed of business decision-makers, university representatives, public administration officials, and personalities from the scientific, cultural, and media worlds, who will gather in Rome on June 5th for the awards ceremony at the Associazione Civita.
There is time until March 31, 2023 to propose nominations for those who will be the new Tecnovisionaries, women who have a realistic vision of the world we live in, who are capable of envisioning a consistent future and have carried out activities in line with their vision. Nominations can be submitted online at https://www.tecnovisionarie.eu/edizione-2023#segnala.
The focus of this edition on energy and the environment is evident and clear: in a historical phase where the cost of energy has risen uncontrollably, the security of supplies has returned to being a priority, and the productivity of businesses must bring the economic and social benefits of the ecological transition, the role of women remains marginal. The first edition [1] of the World Energy Employment Report prepared by the International Energy Agency (IEA) reveals that employment in the energy sector – about 2% of the total workforce, equivalent to over sixty-five million people – is recovering worldwide and is set to grow, with a significant degree of training for skill enhancement, but it also highlights that women are significantly underrepresented. Despite accounting for 39% of global employment, women in the energy sectors make up only 16% of the total. And, as in employment, women also represent a very small share of senior management in energy: just under 14% on average, percentages that are too low to assert data-driven solutions at international discussion tables.
“For the 2023 edition, bringing attention to these issues has been a natural and necessary choice, as we not only live in an emergency, but in these sectors gender equality is even more precarious than in others,” declares Gianna Martinengo Founder of Women&Tech® – Association of Women and Technologies and creator of the Award. “Although women are the driving force of inclusivity and innovation just like men, they remain on the margins of professional growth, but a sustainable society cannot exist without their central role. Gender equality is indeed a catalyst for economic, human, and environmental development, and women must necessarily be included in the implementation of such policies. For this reason, the Tecnovisionarie 2023 will be professionals with a strong vision of the market in which they operate and global trends, aiming for the growth of the energy industries while respecting environmental goals, so that progress and its benefits are truly within everyone's reach,” concludes Martinengo.
It was born in 1999 as a social responsibility project by Gianna Martinengo developed within Didaelkts, the company she founded. In 2009, Women&Tech® became an association shared by a network of companies and individuals who offer their skills to achieve its mission. The goals of the Association are: to enhance female talent in scientific research, technology, and innovation; to promote projects and actions aimed at combating stereotypes and gender discrimination; to contribute to guiding young people towards future professions, including sustainable entrepreneurial models. In 2022, Women&Tech obtained the qualification of Third Sector Entity (ETS), thus formalizing the values and transparency that have always characterized the initiatives developed for companies, institutions, and universities, implementing projects on sustainability, inclusion, enhancement of human capital, diversity, and much more. Gianna Martinengo is an entrepreneur, a humanist by training, and a technologist by choice. Her vision of science and technology has always placed the person and their needs at the center, making them accessible to everyone and suitable for promoting sustainable development.
