Tiziana Catarci

Tiziana Catarci dal novembre 2000 è Professoressa Ordinaria di Sistemi di Elaborazione delle Informazioni presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Informatica, Automatica e Gestionale “Antonio Ruberti” della Sapienza Università di Roma, di cui è direttrice dal novembre 2018. Dal 2014 al 2020 è stata direttrice del Centro Interuniversitario sull’Elaborazione Cognitiva in Sistemi Naturali e Artificiali (ECONA) e dal 2015 al 2018 del Centro Sapienza Design Research. Dal 2009 al 2014 è stata presidente del Centro InfoSapienza. Dal 2010 al 2014 è stata prorettrice per le Infrastrutture e le Tecnologie della stessa università. Inoltre, dal luglio 2015 al giugno 2017 è stata Presidente di Kion S.p.A., società del gruppo CINECA, di cui è stata Consigliere di Amministrazione dal 2011 al 2017.

 

L’attività di ricerca di Tiziana Catarci si è concentrata sin dai suoi esordi nei settori dell’interazione persona-calcolatore e delle basi di dati, e in particolare nell’intersezione tra queste due aree di ricerca. Negli ultimi anni si è interessata a etica e Intelligenza Artificiale, essendo anche tra i soci fondatori di SIPEIA, società italiana per l’etica dell’intelligenza artificiale. Su queste tematiche ha pubblicato oltre 200 articoli in prestigiose riviste e conferenze internazionali e scritto o editato più di 20 libri. Nel 2003 Tiziana Catarci è stata vincitrice dell’IBM Eclipse Innovation Award per il progetto SEAWER. Nel 2014 è stata la prima candidata donna alla carica di Rettore nella secolare storia della Università la Sapienza. Nel 2015 ha ricevuto l’onorificenza di Commendatore della Repubblica Italiana. Nel 2016, è stata invitata a far parte della prestigiosa European Academy of Sciences and Arts, e sempre nel 2016 è stata una delle 100 ricercatrici invitata a far parte del progetto “100 Donne per la Scienza” – http://www.100esperte.it/ – sponsorizzato dalla fondazione Bracco. Nel 2017 ha ricevuto il premio della associazione Rita Levi Montalcini per la “diffusione della cultura scientifica tra le giovani generazioni”. Dal Giugno 2017 è Editor-in-Chief del prestigioso ACM Journal of Data and Information Quality. Nel 2018 è stata scelta per far parte delle “InspiringFifty”, https://italy.inspiringfifty.org/ , 50 donne che fanno da role model nel mondo della tecnologia, a cui si ispirano donne (e uomini) più giovani come punto di riferimento per le loro ambizioni. Nel 2018 è stata nominata fellow della EAI – European Alliance for Innovation.

 

Infine, Tiziana Catarci è molto attiva nella lotta contro le disparità di genere e nella promozione delle discipline STEM tra le studentesse tramite progetti dedicati a livello scolastico e universitario e agendo come role-model per varie iniziative tra cui “Inspiring Girls” (http://www.inspiring-girls.it/).

Tiziana Catarci is full professor in Computer Science and Engineering at Sapienza University of Roma (http://www.diag.uniroma1.it/users/tiziana%20catarci) director of the Department of Computer, Control, and Management Engineering “Antonio Ruberti”, and.

During 2010-14 she has been Sapienza vice-rector for technologies and infrastructures and during 2009-2014 she has been president of the Sapienza ICT service center. During 2015-2018 she has been director of the Sapienza Design Research center, and during 2014-20 director of the ECONA Interuniversity Research Centre on the Cognitive Processing in Natural and Artificial Systems. Finally, during 2015-2017 she has been the president of KION, a private company of the Cineca group.

 

Tiziana Catarci’s main research interests are in theoretical and application oriented aspects of visual formalisms for databases, human-computer interaction, user interfaces, usability, smart environments, information visualization, data management, data quality and digital libraries, AI ethics. Tiziana Catarci is the Editor-in-Chief of the ACM Journal of Data and Information Quality. Moreover, she is associate editor of several international journals and has been co-chair of many important international conferences in both database and hci areas. Dr. Catarci has been a founder Member of the Italian Chapter of the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction and, very recently, a founder of SIPEIA, the Italian Scientific Society for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence.

 

Finally, she is very active in combating gender disparities and promoting the STEM disciplines among female students by promoting dedicated projects at both school and university level and acting as role-model for “Inspiring Girls”(http://www.inspiring-girls.com/) and other initiatives.

 

In 2003 she has been the recipient of the IBM Eclipse Innovation Award. In 2015 she received the honor of “Commendatore” of the Italian Republic. In 2016 she has been nominated member of the prestigious European Academy of Sciences and Arts. In 2016 she has been included among the “100 Women for Science” project – http://www.100esperte.it/. In 2017 she received the Levi Montalcini Association award for the “diffusion of scientific culture among younger generations”. In 2018 she has been included among the “InspiringFifty”, https://italy.inspiringfifty.org/ ,the most influential women in the tech world. In 2018 she has been nominated fellow of the EAI – European Alliance for Innovation.
