Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the Simulation Research Laboratory at Tufts University

She is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Tufts University (USA, MA), where she also manages the Simulation Research Laboratory. She has a degree in Informatics from Boston University and obtained her PhD at Northeastern University. She was the first female engineer in the US to be granted tenure in an Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Before joining Tufts, she worked for Intel (then called the Digital Equipment Corporation), where she designed computers. She has received 5 NASA “Outstanding Research” awards for her research in the fields of modeling and simulation. She is an IEEE Fellow, Worldwide Director of the IEEE Women in Engineering and President of the IEEE Educational Society. She is also Editor-in-Chief of the WIE (Women in Engineering) magazine. Karen Panetta is also extremely dedicated to promoting girls’ entry into her field. This is why she created “Nerd Girls”: a national programme that sees engineering students help their younger colleagues to overcome the barriers and stereotypes that could discourage them from choosing a scientific career.
