She is a professor at the Ecole Polytecnique Federale of Lausanne (EPFL) and the head of its Learning Algorithms and Systems Laboratory (LASA). She obtained her undergraduate degree in Physics from the EPFL, her PhD from the University of Edinburgh and worked as a researcher at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Her research deals with the development of friendly, adaptable human-robot interfaces; an inter-disciplinary sector that draws on different areas of Engineering, Informatics and Biology.
The LASA laboratory employs 17 people. Two thirds of the lab deals with robotics and research on Human-Robot Interaction, which allows for robots to be “taught”, or rather trained, to perform certain operations and tasks. Aude Billard and the LASA team’s research is also relevant to the field of Medicine: it has been employed in the study of cerebral lesions and autism.
